05' Year in Review 2005, A year has passed already!
RCSM started off the 05' year with a Special New Years Days Race, for no reason, just the heck of it. Sort of like two kids standing on the street corner saying “I will race you to the next corner.” So what the hey, we raced. We are racers; we race, why not?
As I recall we did not have a Winter Points Series at the Track for 2004. The good Lord and M&M only know. But what the heck, we raced Wednesday and Saturday nights, just for the bragging rights from week to week. So it started with January 2005, we raced, and were looking forward to the first big race of the year.
Klein Motor Sports First Annual Winter Nationals
Drivers came from all over the country to participate. Unfortunately, this is before Boone and I started keeping records and making our notes so we could do a race recap. So I don’t have any recollection of who did what, who was there or the final results. But, as I recall Carol was about to send me into orbit, when I asked; “are we gonna do this again soon? She was one tired lady, but she was of great support for Dennis. They both did an outstanding job is making this event happen. For three days of racing, it was quite an effort and was enjoyed by all the spectators and racers alike.
DO.com
With no rest for the wicked, Mike Lubonavich and Mike Bjordahl started the Spring Points Series only to be set aside for the 2005 Dirt Oval.Com Nitro Tour. This was the second major race of the year for RCSM and the second race Sponsored by Dirt Oval.Com in as many years. Competition was just as keen as it was in 2004 and at the Winter Nationals, and culminating the night with a Shootout of all the Winners in all the Heats.

2005 RCSM Point Series
With two big regional races out of the way, it was time for us regular racers to get down to serious point series racing. There was resurgence in the Pan Car Series this time with several crossovers from the Nitro Classes. RCSM was running two and three heats on average with the Pan Cars alone.

4th of July Pan Car Shootout
Then the 4th of July (2nd) Annual Pan Car Shoot Out. For an event, that might happen then again might not, this race was the hi-lite of the year for RCSM’s Pan Car Racers. With guest racers coming from across town, it was quite a reunion instead of a racing event!
Danny “Boone” Wilson came up with the concept last year and he, with DRM Trophies sponsored the race. Acting on inquiries this year about the event, he decided he was going to do it again! One of the first changes was to get a consensus from our racers, from both at the track through Mike Lubanovich and online in the community forum to see who would be interested. Originally planning for the 4th weekend, he received inquiries for another weekend, for with the promise of a long weekend and fireworks it was decided to delay the 4th of July event. Leaving it up to the contestants in order for more people to attend. So the 9th was settled on. Thus he was able to get some sponsors and generate more interest. His initial plans were to run the 6 cell stocks, but with inquiries there were some fellows who expressed the desire to run 19T/4 cell classes as well.
Raymond McCoy and the Track Staff stepped in and did some poking around to test the waters so to speak. They did some experimenting and accommodated everyone who was interested. The track staff had planned to run both classes of cars together in one big shootout. But, a few folks had different ideas and wanted the classes separated. So, as always in typical RC Sports Mania tradition, the Track Staff gladly complied.
Congrats to this years 4th of July Pan Car Shoot Out Raymond McCoy with the runners up of Mike Fleek & Jim Hock.
US Pan Car Championships
So with these events out of the way, what do racers do, they race. Man, the summer was hot, but barely made a dent in the attendance. As I recall we were all quite happy doing our Wednesday and Saturday racing when B. J. Williams sent me an e-mail, which I forwarded onto Boone, thus began the relation with the US Pan Car Championships.
“Hey Boone check this out” was the header of an e-mail I had forwarded to him while RCSM was preparing for the 2005 4th of July Pan Car Shoot Out. It was a solicitation from some fellow going under the moniker of USPANCARCHAMPS from another forum inquiring if our track would be interested in hosting one of their events. Well, Boone isn’t one to be easily distracted, hehe, but he responded to the E-mail delaying discussion until after the PCSO2005 and to consult with the M&M Boys. Then the next thing your know, was the first thing you thought you knew, then you didn’t know it at all, and Whammo
… RCSM is hosting another regional event.
Not bad, 4 big events in one year! Sure have come a long way since I started racing at RCSM, that was about 6 years ago. M&M, Gary and Cinda really pulled it off this year.
SO, after two days of qualifying and finals on Sundays, Mom and Aunt Bea (M&M) announced the winners and handed out the trophies to:
1/10 NasCar Stock 4-cellBrian LiebigDave Cochran*Scott Betz* 1/10 NasCar 19T 4-cellRyan GreenwaldDale Bonnema*Mike Fleek* |
1/10 NasCar Mod 4-cellGary McAlisterRaymond McCoyMike Fleek |
*2nd and 3rd place finishers, were tied, and the fastest qualifying time to took care of that issue!
So, what is next, the Fall/Winters Point Series is underway at this writing, who knows how that will turn out. But, true to form, M&M have pulled it off again. Just to keep things interesting and to challenge the skills of the racers at RCSM they have thrown a “stick in the spokes”. This point series includes 2 Asphalt races and two short track races. I didn’t (and chose not to) get to race on those nights, but those hard heads that shared my negative opinion about this change, sang a different tune after “trying” the new format.
The DODC season came to an end writes Mike Lubanovich: “I for one am proud to have a great bunch of drivers that represented RCSM. All the drivers that chased the tour did very well so hold your heads high. A big Congratulations goes out to Dennis Klein for winning Open Sprint and Small Block EDM in the Western Division. Also to note are the top 4 spots in the Western Region of DODC Sprints were from our local drivers:

So feel fortunate guys you have competed with some of the best DO racers in the country!!! Having competed in some of these tour events I have seen the level of competition and its tough. You guys are awesome. Job well done!
On a personal note as most of you know Chris Cramer and Billy Fischer have moved on to other parts of the country. They are two of the finest R/C drivers I have ever had the pleasure of racing against. They will be truly missed. I wish them the best of luck in their new surroundings and hope to race with them again someday."
Sadly, we lost a long time friend and racer, who passed away this summer leaving us to carry on. Thanks “Pops”. He definitely will be missed.
What’s going on for 2006, well for one - Klein R/C Motorsports will also be hosting the RC Winter Nationals early next year at RCSM so there is plenty of time to get prepared.
